My Students
Third grade is a wonderful year when students come into their own as learners and especially readers. Research shows that third grade is a critical time for student growth and learning. Cultivating a love of reading, math, and science are at the forefront of my practice.
My students are diverse in racial, cultural, and language backgrounds.
Our school is a Title I school in Seattle, WA. In a city rapidly changing due to gentrification, it is vitally important to support the students that are the furthest from educational justice.
My Project
My first DonorsChoose project was a flood of books that made my students beam from ear to ear. I want to keep that momentum going with even more books that inspire, engage, and excite young readers.
Mirrors and windows help children see themselves in stories and give them a sense of other's experiences.
I first learned of this concept from a colleague that was helping me understand how to pick out children's books for diverse audiences. This project will help me bring a large number of books to young readers for years to come.
Thank You, Omu and Birdsong are mirrors for Black and Native students. Voice of Freedom and The Youngest Marcher are windows into the world of the Civil Rights Movement. Thank you for considering my students and this project!
