Help me give my students their own copies of The Poet X and Heavy: An American Memoir, two incredible texts that students will use as anchors to interrogate and explore their own identities.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our incoming 12th-grade class is full of vibrant, bright, thoughtful students who are yearning for opportunities to better prepare them for the world beyond high school. They are an eclectic bunch, and because most of them have been together for the last 2 years in person, have developed strong relationships that make their class function as a cohesive unit.
With their own personal copies of Poet X and Heavy, each student will have the opportunity to dig deep and ask questions not only of the text but of themselves, both who they are currently and who they want to become.
A multitude of copies of both texts will allow us to have rich, in-depth in-class discussions as well as provide students the opportunity to take the books home for further analysis. Students will be analyzing the complexities within individuals and relationships throughout the reading of both texts and ultimately, they will write a 5-7 page essay that explores the complexities of identity in both texts and how those complexities connect to their own personal experiences.
