Mirrors and Windows: Learning Diversity Through Experiences and Books
Help me give my students books with diverse characters! It is personally validating and academically engaging for scholars to see themselves and their life experiences reflected in the pages of books.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an English Language Learner teacher in a low-income, high-poverty school district where my scholars face several challenges inside and outside of the classroom. 100% of my scholars eat breakfast and lunch at school. Our elementary school is a Title I school, which means we rely on donations and money from the government. Some of my scholars do not live with their parents, some are in foster care. They face social and emotional challenges. Despite these challenges, they are present everyday ready and willing to learn with a warm smile and positive attitude! Our classroom is an inviting, caring, community of eager learners. They are eager to learn new and exciting things!
My Project
It is important for all scholars to see themselves on pages of books. Mirrors are important. So are windows. It is sometimes difficult for scholars of different races to connect and care about each other. Often some scholars don’t have windows into the racism that their peers face—and if they don’t see it, they can’t help stop it.
These awesome books will help scholars understand what it’s like for people who don’t share their race, religion, or socio-economic status - diverse books teach empathy!
Positive learning outcomes will be created by having different and divergent perspectives; scholars will value unique aspects that make everyone different, which allows them to embrace the differences in the classroom!
