This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is composed of 20 energetic children between the ages of 6 and 8. Each child is bursting with ideas, creativity, enthusiasm and love. We all come from different cultural backgrounds and from different socio-economic backgrounds. We learn differently and we have different opinions. Our differences make us a community that is reflective of the world. It is my honor to help strengthen our classroom community by helping each child learn about each other and about the world beyond our classroom doors.
My Project
This year, we studied the actions of young Marley Dias who began her quest with the hashtag #1000BlackGirlBooks. My group of 20 students were enthralled with this young activist and asked "Why don't we have more books that look like us?" When students ask, teachers can't ignore. These books will live in our classroom library as prominent examples of mirrors and windows. My students, while first graders and learning how to read, will love the illustrations and pour over the words together. Books that reflect everyone in the classroom are necessary and very much wanted by every single student. I appreciate any donations you offer.
