My Project

My project, Mirror and Window Books, will help me provide reading materials that allow my students to see themselves books and provide them with a way to see the world in which they live. My Intensive Reading students are required to read for twenty minutes a day in class and at home. Students have requested books that have characters in which they are able to identify with (mirror books) along with characters from different cultures that can help them become better global citizens (window books). The goal of this project is to provide Mirror and Window books to students which will encourage them to read daily for twenty minutes.

Books from this project will provide students with engaging stories about characters that are real and relevant to them as young people navigating this ever changing world.

My students are working diligently to pass the required reading state assessment to receive a standard high school diploma. The aim of this project is to provide students with a book to read daily for twenty minutes. Students will discuss their books with peers along with having weekly chats with me regarding the book they have selected. Upon completion of their book, students will create advertisements for the books they read to entice others to read as well.

Books requested are of high interest and will lend themselves to thought provoking discussions. The requested books represent a variety of genres such as fantasy, mystery and fiction and include graphic novels.
