My students need 30 hands-on copies of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane to as the author states "learn to love, to lose, and to love again."
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Rhodes's classroom raised $261
This project is fully funded
My Students
Next year I'll be looping with my students to 5th grade after being with them in 4th. I teach 2 blocks of reading and writing. My classroom is filled with a diverse student population. Ethnicities are numerous and poverty is high.
However, the kids don't see these statistics nor do they care, which is just how I like it.
We come together from all walks of life to LEARN! We enrich each other's lives just by being ourselves. We read about friendship, adventure, love, and even pain. We write about our experiences and emotions. We devour words and spill them out again.
My Project
In The Miraculous Journey, a toy rabbit is cherished but then lost. The author takes the reader on a journey of discovery as the rabbit tries to find love again. Reviewers have stated that DiCamillo’s “use of language is lyrical” and the text has received 4.34 out of 5 starts on Goodreads.com.
Storylines like these are perfect for helping students in difficult situations see that they are not alone.
There is hope!
This particular mentor text will be a part of an author study on Kate DiCamillo. Students have already read two of her other pieces: Because of Winn-Dixie and Tiger Rising. We will draw connections among the three texts and observe author’s craft to evaluate character development, theme, and plot. I’m really looking forward to helping them deepen their thoughts this way!
Reading chapter books like The Miraculous Journey as a whole class allows the teacher to directly model internal thought processes and the use of language arts skills. This direct instruction is paramount to independent success! Students are able to also engage in a shared experience with their classmates. The book then later becomes what we call a “mentor text” serving as a discussion reference on a variety of topics. Students more easily connect ideas and skills to independently read books after having gone through the reading process with a mentor text. Everyone is able to fondly say, “Remember when we read (title of shared text) …”
These 30 hands-on copies will be used for two blocks of 29 students and will be available to share with another teacher of 58 students as well. What an impact!
