This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Is amazing what is in our backyards when we just take a closer look.
I work in an urban school five minutes away from downtown.
Our campus is small and our students can walk to school everyday if they wish. Their neighborhood is surrounded by warehouses and freeways but I want my students to appreciate the small amount of natural setting around them.
My Project
I'm always amazed by the interest my students express whenever we read a story on animals. Being their science teacher I want to show students how they can value the animals and insects in their own community. With binoculars we can explore the animals that live in their neighborhood and observe their behavior. I've seen squirrels, birds, hawks, and other animals throughout our school neighborhood. We can also use the collecting nets to observe and collect insects. What better way to connect what they have learned in a book than seeing it in person.
Many of my students have not been outside their neighborhood.
I want them to appreciate the natural environment they have. Once they learn to appreciate what they have then they can learn to care for it.
