My Students
If you were a student arriving into my classroom in the morning you would hear the sound of soft calming classical music. You would see the visual schedule listing the activities of the day. You would know exactly what to do because routines are extremely important for students with special needs.
I work with the most wonderful students in the world.
They teach me just as much as I teach them. Their smiles light up the room and their ability to learn amazes me every day! The students in my classroom all have special needs. Their needs may include Autism, cognitive impairments, ADHD, speech and language, physical impairments and more. My classroom is one of three self contained special education classrooms in a public K-5 elementary school. It is a Title One school, which means the majority of the children receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students speak English as their second language.
My Project
A mini refrigerator in my classroom will benefit my students with special needs in two essential ways.
First of all, I have a student that is on a special diet to help manage his seizure disorder.
His homemade specific lunch and his snacks need to be refrigerated. He needs to have immediate access to his specific foods.
Secondly, as part of our curriculum, we practice cooking skills. We learn life skills through basic cooking. Students are given the opportunity to follow steps of a written recipe, measure ingredients, spread, mix, cut and taste new foods!!!
Having a mini refrigerator in our classroom enables us to have immediate access to important materials for my students.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
