Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the best job in the world because I get to work with 4-5-year-olds from diverse backgrounds in a neighborhood public school pre-k classroom. Some of my students have never been to school before. They've been taken care of by well-meaning family members but lack school readiness skills such as fine motor, socialization, basic mathematics, and exposure to science and technology. It concerns me when students arrive at my door without the age-appropriate vocabulary to express their wants and needs.
My Project
Students develop lifelong skills through hands-on learning that occurs during play. The importance of play in a Pre-K classroom cannot be underestimated.
Painting at the easel in art area helps children with their physical, social, cognitive, emotional development as well as encourage them to use their imagination.
When holding a paintbrush or alphabet stamp the children are using both small and large muscle development, as well as their eye-hand coordination. This practice with their fine motor control will help them later on with writing. Painting helps reinforce the names of colors, shapes, decision-making and creative thought process. What happens when they mix two primary or secondary colors together?
Painting can also help children express feelings and emotions that they can not verbalize. Painting can play the role of a therapy to help a child who might be feeling different emotions; which is why I'm requesting an easel, paints, ink pads, and paintbrushes.
