This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine you've made something wonderful, but have no way to save it for posterity and share it with the ones you love. Our students are learning to express themselves through art, but don't have a reliable method of preserving this process or their final performances. A quality camera is the answer!
Approximately 400 students in grades pre K through 5 attend our Arizona neighborhood school.
Most of the children are from low-income families and the majority speak English as a second language. For many of the students, our school is the safest place they know--where they can feel loved, appreciated, and challenged. Year after year, our school has suffered severe budget cuts that force the removal of special programs like Reading is Fundamental and people like a school counselor. Luckily, we have been able to maintain our Opening Minds through the Arts (OMA) program, which provides children enriching opportunities to learn core curriculum through multiple artistic genres. Students create magnificent works of art including visual representations, full operas, original musical scores, dance routines, and violin and orchestra performances. OMA is a vehicle where students experience joy and success; these occurrences should be treasured and preserved for them and their families.
My Project
With a quality digital camcorder, instructors will be able to document their classes' productions and performances. Students can view themselves as they learn and during their special moments when they demonstrate their new skills to an audience. Videos can be made for individuals, parents, community members, and teachers. We can display the children's accomplishments on our website, so people can see the kids in action and learn more about the OMA program and our school. Hopefully, community members will be inspired to lend support to our school and new parents will be interested in enrolling their children. Student families will have a tangible way to view what the kids are doing on a daily basis, witness the growth, and be amazed at the talents they possess.
Hopefully, the students themselves will eventually learn to use the camera to record their own journeys-- interviewing each other, narrating their projects, and demonstrating what they are learning to the world.
Having the ability to record and keep these artistic adventures a living memory is the culminating piece the students are missing.
Your donation to this cause will provide the resource students need to see themselves as the stars that they are. When viewed as creative and talented individuals and as they learn to use the camera themselves, the students self image and confidence can only improve. The videos will be a way to share this joy and magic with their supporters and loved ones.
