Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Mini Makers: Tie-Dye Edition is an interactive, multidisciplinary activity designed to bring the color wheel to life through the vibrant art of tie-dye. Integrating concepts from visual arts, family and consumer sciences (FCS), and mathematics, this project offers students a dynamic, hands-on experience that nurtures both creativity and critical thinking.

Students will explore primary, secondary, and tertiary colors by applying their knowledge of color theory to dye a variety of textile items, including socks, scrunchies, and tote bags.

As they engage in this creative process, students will experiment with color mixing, observe chemical reactions between dyes and fabrics, and practice measuring precise dye-to-water ratios—reinforcing fundamental math skills in a real-world context.

This project promotes self-expression while fostering a deeper understanding of visual harmony, proportion, and the science behind color creation. By the end of the activity, students will walk away with one-of-a-kind wearable art pieces and a stronger appreciation for the intersection of math, science, and creativity.

Learning Objectives:

Understand and apply the principles of the color wheel, including primary, secondary, and tertiary color mixing.

Utilize basic measurement and ratio calculations to create accurate dye mixtures.

Explore textile design through hands-on application of dye techniques.

Enhance problem-solving and fine motor skills through fabric manipulation and design planning.

Foster creativity, collaboration, and cross-disciplinary learning in a fun and engaging environment.
