Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a 4th grade gifted teacher in a very diverse school. The students do not all have the same opportunities at home and thus need to be exposed to as many opportunities as possible at school. One goal is to expose them to computer programming since this will be an area for many jobs in their future.

My students are a very diverse group who come to our school from several other schools in the district to participate in the Gifted program.

The students come from a variety of backgrounds and many are ESL students(more than 50% in my class). Our district is not able to provide much technology in the classrooms for the students and many students do not have access to computers and internet at home, thus I try to provide as many opportunities as possible at school. These mini-iPads would allow the opportunity for the students to be exposed to computer programming during their math and science and even Genius Hour time. The students come to school with a strong desire to learn and thrive on the exposure to a variety of new learning opportunities.

My Project

Having these mini-iPads in our classroom will provide a wide variety of opportunities. The students will be able to use them individually and in small groups. There are many wonderful apps and websites which the students would be able to utilize for the completion of presentations or to enrich their learning in many areas. Computer Sciences is where many job opportunities will be when my students graduate, thus I hope to expose them to computer programming. There are several websites and apps which they could use, including: Code.org, Hopscotch, & Scratch.mit.edu. Using these new coding skills the students could then create many projects as a means to show their learning across the curriculum. In addition to these apps the students could also use green screen apps and stop motion apps to create projects to demonstrate their learning and/or retell stories they read or even wrote.

Utilizing these mini-iPads in the classroom will provide many different opportunities which can spark an interest in an area that my students may not even know exist yet.

These will help level the playing field with the students in wealthier areas who have access to technology at home and in their classroom daily.
