My Students

My kids (students) are my life. When they struggle, I struggle, but when they thrive, I thrive. In order for this to happen, engagement is key.

With smart phones, television, and gaming consoles dominating daily life, it is not surprising to learn that school doesn't quite capture students' attention the way it used to.

In classrooms today, it is imperative that teachers find new and innovative ways to engage students in their learning. Any time my students have the opportunity to get their hands on a piece of technology, they are immediately hooked. They are consumed with the ability to create and collaborate both within, and outside of the classroom. However, being in a Title I school, this technology is not always readily available. Most students do not have computers at home. Unfortunately, this means most students do not have the necessary 21st Century skills required in today's society. If there was ever a group of students who would benefit from new and engaging technology, it would be my wonderful fifth grade students!

My Project

For the first time at our school, fifth grade students will be given the opportunity to partake in the advanced math curriculum. I have been fortunate to be selected to teach this group of students. Although I will have several advanced students, I will also have numerous students below grade level. In order to accommodate the needs of all students, I will be teaching using a method called a "flipped classroom". In this setting, my advanced students will be given the opportunity to learn parts of the advanced curriculum at home. Those without access to computers at home will be provided these iPads. During school, the iPads will be used during math and reading centers to help remediate my lower performing students. They will be practicing basic math facts and reading skills on a variety of apps. By having a flipped classroom, I will be able to ensure that all my students receive the education they deserve despite their level of ability inside or outside of the classroom.

By giving the students the opportunity to partake in the advanced math curriculum in fifth grade, students will enter middle school on the advanced diploma track.

This is something students from our school have never been able to do. With the use of iPads, I am confident my students will be prepared for the challenges of the advanced math curriculum in a flipped classroom, while my weaker students get the engaging remediation they need!
