Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Struggling with outdated technology that does not meet my students needs is always frustrating. Students are constantly sharing and waiting their turn to utilize desktop computers that are becoming limited in their use during reading or literacy work stations. An upgrade would be beneficial!

My students are English language learners with Spanish being their first language.

I have had the pleasure to loop with this group from kindergarten to first. Their challenge is to get them to show growth in their second language, English. They are currently in a dual language first grade classroom. It is only the second year that the dual language program has been initiated in our school. My colleagues and I have been working hard to promote the dual language program at our school. We are a pre-k through fifth grade school. We currently serve two sections of first dual language, three sections of kinder dual language, and three sections of pre-k dual language. Technology at our school is becoming outdated and funds to replace it usually goes to the upper grades first.

My Project

Our students will be utilizing the mini iPads with a variety of apps that assist in: reading comprehension, phonics skills, ebooks, school assessments, school programs, phonemic awareness activities, independent readers, dictionaries, translators, and many more. All these activities would be utilized during the students learning workstations on a rotation so that all can have access to the mini iPads on a daily basis. They will also be used with cooperative groups during a lesson to access information, read text, view a lesson, listen to a story, record or document a project. The mini iPads will also be used as part of a reading intervention allowing more students to have access directly from our classroom instead of losing time going to the lab and finding that the computers are not working well. With the use of these apps and activities on the mini iPads students will be able to improve their reading skills and become better readers.

I am always looking for new ways to incorporate fun ideas into reading and learning.

My students love computers and are always engaged when the get there hands on them. With the varied reading and literacy programs and apps available, students will be engaged giving them the opportunity to become better readers. The options of having access to Spanish and English materials available through the use of technology gives me an opportunity to select what materials are best needed for my students.
