Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Imagine giving students who have grown up with little to no experience in nature, extended periods of time studying the most intriguing questions in environmental science, by creating mini-documentaries that answer some of the questions that most concern them. Students that have rich experiences in nature doing authentic fieldwork are more likely to choose a college career path. If they have created professional looking mini-documentaries, they can include these in a portfolio in their college applications, which we will help them prepare. Our students are participating in a unique program for youth on juvenile probation. We provide them with challenging innovative educational experiences, provide them with classroom counseling and therapy, career counseling and case management. Our students are discovering, for the first time, that they are capable of creating exciting field studies that have the potential to improve conditions for all living things in our urban jungle. As one student explained, "the streets are nature too". As they take ownership of a research project in one of the largest city parks in the U.S., they broaden their horizons and begin to feel that there is a connection between their lives on the streets "in the ghetto", and the web of life that we all are a part of. Through Donorschoose.org, our students have had access this year to research grade plankton and aquatic bottom nets, a digital microscope that records digital and still images of microscopic organisms they have fished out of ponds and lakes, a laptop computer and electronic sensors for measuring pH, nitrates, dissolved oxygen, CO2, temperature and turbidity. The students have become interested in the way that nature interacts with urban parks and want to make mini-documentaries of the wildlife that has found its' way into the urban forest, including migratory hawks & falcons, egrets, great blue herons, king fishers, ducks, songbirds, raccoons, coyotes, fox, rabbits, skunks, opossums, squirrels, rats, mice, snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, salamanders, and several species of fish. We need a Nikon D90 with a variety of lenses, telephoto, wide angle, close-up, and two Sony Handicam camcorders with lighting and tripods. The students will use our above mentioned Macbook Pro to edit their mini-documentaries incorporating digital video and still images and adding sound tracks, writing their own music, and adding narration that they create using story boards. They will then present a film festival for the community and will use these documentaries in their portfolios and to seek internships and employment in areas related to environmental science and or the film industry.
