Mini Chihulies

Help me give my students the opportunity to create vibrant sculptures using plastic plates, vibrant colored Sharpie markers, and heat guns. This is a hands-on opportunity to understand the properties of plastic, heat manipulation, and 3D artistic form.

My Project

I love my GT students because they think outside the box—they are creative, curious, and love to get hands-on with their learning. Their energy and willingness to explore new ideas makes every lesson an adventure, and it’s inspiring to see them push boundaries and think in ways others might not. These students thrive when given the freedom to experiment, question, and invent, and I am always looking for ways to spark that excitement in the classroom.

Giving them plastic plates, markers, and heat guns opens the door to unforgettable, tactile learning, inspired by artist Dale Chihuly.

Through this project, they’ll discover the properties of plastic, the effects of heat, and the concept of transformation in a real, visual way. More than just a science lesson, it’s a creative journey that connects art, chemistry, and engineering. They won’t just learn—they’ll remember what it felt like to turn an ordinary item into something spectacular, and that kind of experience fuels lifelong curiosity.
