My Students

I teach Media Center (library and computer science) at a Title I school, meaning the majority of my students are considered "at-risk." Our students almost all qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Many come from one-parent families or are not even being raised by their parents. Needless to say, my students are not given the same opportunities as many kids their age.

They are amazing kids with drive and talent.

As a teacher, it is very difficult to see them miss out on the learning opportunities that so many kids their age have. I will do anything I can to give them what many kids their age already get.

My Project

Students love technology and robots so why not give the students what they want?!? My students are learning to code using Micro;bits; which are a very small computer that can be attached to a multitude of accessories to expand the capabilities of the Micro;bit. One of these expansion devices is the Cutebot!!!

Cutebots allow the Micro;bit to be turned into a variety of different robots.

The Cutebots can be programmed to be controlled by a remote, to track follow a light source or a lined pathway, or even programmed to explore an area and avoid obstacles using built in ultrasonic sensors. Students can program the speed, direction, and path it travels using a web-based software program that can be downloaded to the Micro;bit which acts as the brain for the Cutebot.

These devices allow students to code and program, while still being able to be creative and create their own functions of this bot based on their interests.
