My students are a fun group of creative and active fifth graders. We live in a rural, isolated village in Northwest Alaska, where many students practice subsistence hunting and fishing to support their families. Most of my students are Native Alaskan and are taught traditional native values. My students love playing sports, hunting caribou, riding snow machines and four-wheelers, going ice fishing and sledding.
My students are a diverse group, with strong ties to their families, their culture, and the land.
In the classroom, they are an energetic group that enjoys working in groups, doing hands-on activities, and playing goofy games.
My Project
My students live in a rural Alaskan community that relies a lot on mineral mining for the local economy. As a result, many of my students are interested in gold mining, and they are curious about Alaskan mineral resources. With these rocks and minerals kits, I can give them hands-on activities to understand the minerals that are being mined in their town and throughout Alaska.
When my students understand more about rocks and minerals, they will understand more about their local environment and economy.
These rocks and minerals are an essential addition to an environmental science unit that will help them to understand some jobs that will be available to them in their small town.
