This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Whether I am teaching a unit rocks & minerals, maps, or resources, I have to laugh when one of my students raises their hand and says "we know that word - we learned it on Minecraft"! My students enjoy playing Minecraft and they are particularly drawn to the graphic novel section of my science classroom library. Why not combine the love of both?
Reading Minecraft graphic novels will expose my students to science concepts in an engaging way while facilitating an appreciation of life-long reading.
Whether it is finding a book to read during homeroom or igniting a middle schooler's curiosity, having a science library of graphic novels will excite my students. Graphic novel books present topics in a concise format with pictures and situations in which students can learn about science concepts. When I see my students browsing through our class library selection of books, students usually focus on the books with many colorful pictures, interesting topics, and easy reading. I enjoy observing the wonderment of new facts that I can help explain. The students also share these new facts with other fellow students thereby creating more collaboration with their peers. A journey awaits my students with these Minecraft graphic novels.
