We have been studying coal formation and are ready to dig into a "mine", and we need COAL!
I teach a whole school, interactive science lab class.
My students range in grade from first to eighth, attend an inclusive public elementary school, and are enthusiastic rock hounds. They love to be active and are motivated by hands-on activities and experiments.
My Project
My students have been taken back to the Carboniferous period of the Paleozoic era to see how coal was formed, and now, in present day, they are ready to examine the coal that formed, learn how we mine it, and understand how it is used. The bituminous and anthracite coal purchased will be used to test (density, hardness, luster...), explore (under the microscope, messiness, versus charcoal...) and to "mine" (mining safety and responsibility...). Students will learn about the positive and negative aspects of mining and using coal.
Your contribution will help ignite the imagination and thinking of over 300 elementary students!
Students will have a deeper understanding and appreciation of one of Illinois' nonrenewable resources, coal!
