Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my school are very diverse. I have students who have grown up all over the country, and I have other students who have never left our state. Students speak multiple languages at home, and some students are still learning English.
One thing all of my students have in common is that their high school diploma will open doors to the future—doors that may not have been available to their parents and grandparents.
One of the biggest hurdles for students is the fact that Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and a fourth year of math, are requirements for graduation.
Our students are kind citizens. Instead of a senior prank, our senior class participates in 'Prank it Forward,' where they pay it forward and raise money for a community member in need. Whether it's a fellow classmate battling cancer, an elementary school student with an undiagnosed medical ailment, or a family who has experienced a tragedy, our students believe in kindness and inclusion. These are the role models that my freshmen look up to, and as they get their turn as seniors, those are the shoes they have to fill.
My Project
Many of our students stay for after-school tutoring several days per week. They arrive at school by 7am for breakfast, lunch is over by 10:30am. Tutoring doesn't end until 4:45pm, meaning buses don't drop students home until 5:30pm, seven hours after lunch! Needless to say, a small snack during tutoring is very much appreciated by our students.
Hungry students are not very productive students, so being able to give students a quick break and snack to give them a little energy to keep the brains going is super important!
We are asking and encouraging are students to stay for two hours after school to improve their academic skills, going above and beyond the requirements of the school day. The additional time and effort they put in pays dividends with their grades as well as their confidence.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
