Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are newly arrived immigrants from over 35 countries around the world. They have all experienced a profound change in their lives, leaving their home countries for a life in New York. My school is a warm, welcoming place, and my students are remarkable people, brave and wise beyond their years. They are kind, compassionate, caring, and deserving of our support and encouragement. Our school is located in a very industrial area with little access to open green space.
My Project
Research shows teenagers are the most stressed group of people in America when school is in session, according to a 2014 American Psychological Association survey. And my students are even more stressed with the added trauma of immigration. They are living in a new country and city, speaking a new language, living in a new culture. Many are here living in very crowded, noisy apartments with people they don’t know very well. So the feeling of being connected to something bigger than themselves is very important and valuable to them. We often think of awe as being inspired by beautiful settings, but that can be challenging in LIC, where green spaces are hard to find.
These materials will be used to help my students connect to the beauty inside of them, helping them to reconnect with awe without even leaving the building, through mindful awareness and presence.
In creating watercolors and special touchstones, students will experience awe together, and the positive feelings will continue and are heightened.
Some people might think that these activities aren’t academic enough. But I would argue that in using these strategies, students become more engaged, and more willing participants in the class.
