This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Creative, talented, mischievous, neurodiverse, multi-lingual, courageous, and curious are just some of the words that come to mind when I think of my amazing fourth graders. They are eager to learn and have wonderful aspirations! They are future veterinarians, musicians, doctors, teachers, athletes, app developers, and clothing designers, just to name a few of their hopes and dreams.
Yet many of these same children face challenges and traumas that others won't face in an entire lifetime.
All of my students qualify for and receive free breakfast and lunch. We have a high population of English language learners, many still in the early stages of acquiring English, and we have a significant number of neurodiverse students. Now Covid-19 has presented us with an unprecedented situation that none of us could have anticipated, and they are responding beautifully! Despite these challenges, my students come to school every day. It is to recognize their commitment to learning and to acknowledge the difficulties they are facing that I hope to fulfill this request.
My Project
Mindfulness is an important tool in the toolbox that I give to students to help them learn to successfully navigate the myriad challenges that life throws at them. I practice mindfulness throughout my day and have been incorporating mindfulness exercises into my classroom routine for about three years now. Mindfulness helps students self-regulate, focus, feel calmer, and even improve social outcomes. In a world full of electronics, noise, change, and chaos, mindfulness offers an opportunity to find a quiet place inside yourself and the space to be present in the moment. We pause for mindful minutes, utilize a singing bowl, and (pre Covid-19) utilized finger labyrinths as part of our mindful practices. I still consider myself a "beginner" and am asking for both adult texts and student books to help me further develop our collective understanding and application of mindfulness in our lives.
