My students need calming, sensory objects, timers, and books with calming strategies to help them refocus, calm their minds and bodies, and be mindful of their feelings.
My students are incredibly special. They come from a small community that is really starting to increase their support of our school. We are working really hard to work with the parents and families to help them feel a part of the school unit.
Our students need support and tools to help them deal with heavy emotions.
Their lives at home are very chaotic and uncertain, and school really is a safe place for them. They are still learning how to process their thoughts and understand their feelings.
My Project
Having a Peace Corner in our classroom will be a calming, centering space for my students to refocus and prepare themselves for learning. The students at our school have a lot of challenges already facing them in their home lives and community, and I strive to make our classroom a safe place where they feel loved, supported, and cared for.
These sensory materials will give my students tangible objects to focus on, so that they can process their emotions and thoughts and move on from any mental distractions they have going on.
The stress balls and fidget puzzles will give them something tactile to squeeze and manipulate, helping them refocus. The books will give them breathing and calming strategies, that we will go over together as a class as well. The liquid motion timers will be a helpful distraction as well, giving students something to follow visually, allowing their brain some time to focus on something else. The large 3 minute timer will give them parameters for using the Peace Corner wisely. Being able to take a break in a comfortable place in our classroom will allow them to take care of their emotional needs without distracting the rest of the class and the learning that is going on.
