This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is for at-risk kids. We are located in Milwaukee, an urban area, and are open to students who meet the "at-risk" criteria. Our students are considered at-risk of not graduating high school for a wide variety of reasons. Many have tried traditional high schools in the inner city previously and have been unsuccessful there. A majority of my students are living in poverty and dealing with the many issues that stem from that. Often they don’t speak English as their first language, have suffered severe losses, including losing their parents or caretakers, or they have children of their own. They are the kindest, funniest people you could ever meet, and their behavior mirrors their need to survive their particular situations.

Every day our students are willing to put aside their differences, whether they are cognitive, socioeconomic, racial, or gang-based, in order to gain their education.

Our school is an alternative one specifically designed for students who are deficient in credits, academic skills, an understanding of behavioral norms, and emotional support.

My Project

As challenging as it is to live through a pandemic, I cannot imagine what it would be like to be a student during these times. Social-emotional learning will be a crucial focus this year, as students need to know the importance of taking care of themselves.

These materials will help me share some mindfulness strategies with my students.

We will create focus bottles using glitter and glue, and students will be able to decorate those and other supplies using the mini-diamond art packs. My students will not only be able to take home some fun creations, but they will also be learning strategies to take care of themselves, manage their emotions, and express their creativity.
