My students need yoga mats to have their own personal space when they move around the classroom and soft lighting.

My Students
Our school is in a rural Vermont community. We have about two hundred and sixty students in grades kindergarten through eighth. Many of our classes are single classes meaning there is one fourth grade class and one fifth grade class this year. These students have been together as one class, since first grade. There is no opportunity to mix them up with other fourth or fifth graders. They are kind and nurturing to one another since they have been together for so long, but that time together also leads to some frustrations with each other; similar to brothers and sisters fighting but loving one another.
Our school building is small; our cafeteria and gym share the same space.
There are no extra spaces for students to go and work as all of our rooms are used for academic and social/emotional needs. The students are often together all day in the classroom.
The students are academically, socially, and economically diverse. Although they attend a small, rural school, our staff meets the needs of all of our students and are always looking for creative ways to continue to support them academically and socially.
My Project
Students at FCS come from a variety of backgrounds. Every student deserves a comfortable, safe space to spend their days. We want our room to be a calming area for students to thrive. Softer lights and yoga mats will allow for this environment to be created.
The harsh classroom lights and hard chairs take a toll on students, especially with the high demands we put on children nowadays.
Softer lighting and seating will help all students work to their best potential. The lighting will allow us to turn off the fluorescent lights and the yoga mats will let the children kneel at lowered tables or sit in other areas.
It used to be that the child's desk was his or her only personal space. Yoga mats allow all spaces to become the personal space that is deserved.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
