Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students with anxiety who feel frustrated or upset and need a break find it very calming and therapeutic to make something with beads. The students enjoy making bracelets for themselves as well as for friends and family. We want to make mindfulness bracelets for the kids which are feel-good bracelets they can use whenever they are in a difficult situation. These bracelets will be used as another tool/coping skill that can help them regulate their emotions and return to their classroom ready to learn and focus. The students can be taught how to meditate and reflect through mindfulness bracelets.

Students will be prompted with meditative questions such as:

1. Touching and feeling the beads one at a time. What do they feel like? Are the beads different? Can you feel the different shapes and textures with your eyes closed?

2. Do the beads smell like anything?

3. How many different colors did you choose for your bracelet? How many different colors do you see when you look at your bracelet? Do the colors look different in a different light?

4. Can you feel the beads with your fingers one at a time and take a deep breath with each bead? Slowly breathe in and out as you touch each bead.

5. With each bead can you think of something you are grateful for or something positive that has happened today, this week, or this month?

These bracelets and questions can help support you in your classroom, outside at recess, when you are in music class, or when nervous about getting on stage for dance or the field during a sport. These bracelets and the questions can help students regulate their emotions and stay calm as well as calm them down when they are already elevated.
