Mindfully Bringing Awareness

Help me give my students the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where they are and what they’re doing, and not be overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around them.

My Students

The fifth grade students at our school are constantly working toward being stewards of our watershed, empowered decision makers, historians and conscientious community members. We are located in south-central Montana, just north of Yellowstone National Park. We are an active, outdoorsy and environmentally aware class. Being engaged with our "backyard" keeps us connected to our watershed.

Our daily goal is to explore learning through personal experience and modeling.

The Fifth graders of our school value the knowledge they acquire in this year of study, and some students reflect upon graduation that it was their favorite.

My Project

While mindfulness is something we all naturally possess, awareness and understanding comes with practice. Our school district provided a training for all staff from cafeteria workers to administrators in the MindUp program. Specifically, they trained all willing staff, purchased the guide book and a chime for peaceful practice. Acquiring a local foundation grant for literacy materials to build an optimistic classroom library gave us the initial boost into embracing the mindful theory. I am asking for some supplemental materials to take my teaching and students engagement to the next level.

I am striving to incorporate brain focused strategies for learning and living with the MindUp program as the base.

Whenever you bring awareness to what you’re directly experiencing via your senses, or to your state of mind via your thoughts and emotions, you’re being mindful. Our school district has embraced the growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you’re actually remodeling the physical structure of your brain and empowering yourself. To better illustrate this to students, we need scientific brain and heart models to study. We need a quality snow globe to simulate brain processing under stress and clear thinking when calm. For the mindful smelling lesson we need scented oils to safely sniff and guess. Our class would prefer the hammered brass singing bowl over the chime that was provided. We find the singing bowl more peaceful and inviting than the chime. Students love the MindUp program and I see positive behavior results occurring int he school. I now need some "bells and whistles" to take full advantage of the lessons offerings.
