My Students
As a school social worker in an inner city school district, my students tend to come to school with many distractions on their minds. Many live in poverty, parents are working while siblings are caring for them and some are coming to school wondering if they will have breakfast and lunch. Even with these concerns they are eager to learn and be engaged during the school day.
They are creative, thoughtful and full of questions!
They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are my inspiration!
My Project
Mindful tools for children enable them to be doing something while they are expressing their emotion. Rather than acting it out, they can calm their bodies by handling kinetic sand of a pop it stress toy. Each are small enough to manage at ones desk and keep them camp until they are able to express their emotion to their teacher or a staff member. Zen Gardens are a great way to relax when you are angry, anxious or mad. Being able to use this tool give the student chance to focus on something else before being able to express feelings.
