My Project
Many students become overwhelmed by the loud noises in the cafeteria and the number of students at each lunch (approximately 400 students per lunch). Our counseling office holds two daily arts and crafts lunch bunch groups. This group provides a quiet place for our students to build relationships while having a creative outlet and improving their sense of belonging at school. We have done a few different activities this year including: clay sculptures, coloring and painting (on paper and canvases).
Creating art, specifically origami and zen gardens, increases focus and mindfulness in our students.
These zen activities will help build perseverance and focus in a fun environment.
We plan to have a month of origami and zen activities for our lunch bunch leading up to the reopening of the Origami in the Garden exhibit in New Mexico. After taking a virtual "field trip" to view the exhibit, the students can work together to create their own miniature version of the origami sculptures. Some of our students come to the lunch bunch but prefer not to make art. By having a zen garden option those students would be able to participate in the creativity with less stress and create the "garden scene" for the origami pieces.
Having the addition of a fidget will fully engage all participants, even those who want to be in the room, but not create. The zen garden and ooze tube will be able to be used by students after the project is finished.
