My Project
Our school is an intermediate school that serves about 350 5th and 6th graders. Every kid has a session of music class each year. In our class, we study a variety of music skills through instruments such as guitar, ukulele, and keyboards. Traditionally, students come to music class with their homerooms, students they know and have built community and are comfortable with. Next year, the students will be coming to music class as a mixed group, from various homerooms, and class sizes will be larger than ever. I anticipate that this will cause students to feel less connected to their classmates.
Next year, I want to continue to incorporate emotional regulation tools into the classroom, encouraging and fostering an environment for students to self-regulate so that they can access their music learning.
The various brain teasers, mindfulness tools, and storagen items that will be added to our classroom will get students creating and collaborating when they first walk in. This will also get their brains thinking in a creative mindset that will be a great warmup for our music learning. In addition, I am requesting new mindfulness materials which will give students tools to use when they are feeling dysregulated and need a reset. I am hoping that by starting class in this way, and by having a more mindfulness tools, we will be able to build a strong community within our music room with more emotionally regulated students.
