This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work in a Title 1 School in which many of my students are new to this country. Some love team sports, but there are so many who are not comfortable joining in because they don't think they are good enough to play. Sometimes, all it takes is a soccer ball, a basketball hoop, or a pair of running shoes to change a kid’s day—or even their life. For others it could simply be a game in which they do not have to participate as a team member. For many students, sports are more than just games. They’re an escape from stress, a break from tough days, and a way to feel like they belong. But without the right equipment, some kids are left watching from the sidelines. That’s not just a missed game—it’s a missed chance to smile, to breathe easier, to feel confident.
When students have access to sports gear, such as Kam Jam, and Corn Hole, that do not specifically need a team of players, they gain more than the ability to play.
They gain joy. They gain a positive self esteem. They gain the space to run, to laugh, to let go of everything that’s weighing them down. It gives them a chance to feel strong, inside and out.
