My Students
My students are a group of enthusiastic, focused teenagers who want to be successful in life. I am amazed by how different my students are from one another. They are over-aged and under-credited and face many challenges that have slowed their progress in school, but that doesn't prevent them from trying their best to succeed. Some of my students work full time just to make ends meet, and are also faced with being first-generation college students. Their ages range from 13-20 and they may have considered dropping out previously.
My school is located in New York and serves students of a variety of backgrounds, most of whom struggle with depression, anxiety, and severe stress.
I have been working towards improving their social and emotional skills, resume building, preparing them for college, and even holding mock interviews with them. Unfortunately, a lot of my students have chosen to self-medicate as opposed to learning other ways to cope with obstacles they are facing in their lives, so I try every day to improve the morale, the confidence level, and the overall feeling of being in a safe space.
My Project
I am looking to improve the social and emotional learning both in and out of my classroom. I am beginning a Mindful Movement club which will consist of practicing yoga and meditation to help students with stress/anxiety/depression, learn social and emotional skills, and gear them towards a healthier lifestyle.
My students struggle with being able to afford food and basic needs let alone a yoga class or props, so I would like to make this movement as accessible as possible, while also bringing students and their families/our community together in a safe space.
The yoga sets will provide the community with the tools they need to be successful in their practice, including yoga mats, blocks, straps, and towels. Having access to these materials will encourage the students and their families to learn more about yoga and utilize what they learn in their every day lives. The sets will allow them all to focus on the mindful movement rather than the cost of the items they would need to purchase.
