Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over seventy-seven percent of our students receiving free lunch. Our students speak a multitude of languages. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are also diverse in their academics as well.

My students are an enthusiastic, eager group of third-grade students who come from very diverse and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Our school is a Title One school. My students are excited about learning and want to do well. Our class includes gifted learners, English language learners and students with academic disabilities.

My Project

Developing mindfulness in children is necessary for their social-emotional growth. "The Mindful Dragon" by Steve Herman is a wonderful story teaching children about mindfulness, focus, and peace. It teaches them to be mindful and focus on the present when they are feeling sad, alone, or overwhelmed. After reading the story I would like to have my students create miniature Zen Gardens with accessories that are friendly to them.

Using miniature animals, furniture, plants, gnomes, and fairies, the students will create their own personal Zen Garden that helps them think of positive, friendly, and peaceful thoughts and places.

My students will know that their miniature garden is a place of fun and creativity that they can go to and interact with when they are feeling overwhelmed or anxious. Being aware of their emotions and having a connection that is fun for them to interact with will help them focus on mindfulness and reset to the present time and know that there is peace to achieve.
