Mindful Classroom With A Twist

My Students

Every day my scholars walk into the classroom ready to learn and excited about what the day has to offer. This excitement can be hard to maintain in an extended school year, extended school day environment, but they manage to do it. My scholars are incredible individuals with so much potential to grow and flourish.

I teach at a Title I school in West Philadelphia where over 85% of the population is economically disadvantaged and eligible for free and reduced lunches.

Despite many of the hardships my scholars face, they are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.

My Project

This project will comprise of daily, monthly, and yearly practices focused on cultivating mindfulness, and developing a growth mindset in my scholars. These practices will be woven together through the combined effort of On The Goga and myself to create an integrated program that exemplifies how simple, manageable practices create long-term change.

Daily Practices

In-Class Physical Practices. Each 15-30 minute daily practices will include physical yoga and mindfulness practices. These practices will range in content from very active to very restful and from individual to full-class. Practice will be determined each day based on student’s energy levels, mood, and other psychological and physical needs.

Monthly Practices

Monthly practices will integrate mindfulness into other areas of learning. These special labs and projects will show how mindfulness is not just for your yoga mat, by exemplifying it in the real world though science labs, math exercises, English projects, and even technology.

Yearly Practice

The yearly yoga journal project is a single, year-long project designed to tie the whole program together and leave students with a physical reminder of how things change. Each day, along with their daily yoga/mindfulness practice, students will make a journal entry. The entry can be as short or as long as they wish. By the end of the year, they will be able to literally see (through the change in the pages of their journal) how much they have changed from the start of the year, from the simple things (handwriting, favorite music) to the more meaningful things (their abilities and moods).
