This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the luckiest person in the world. I love technology and I love children and have a career that combines my two loves! I love the opportunities that technology provides to my students.
I teach in a Title I school in a very low socioeconomic neighborhood in Greenville, SC. About a third of my students are Hispanic and vast majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch. The families do not have the means to provide many extras, and in some cases, there is not enough money for basic necessities.
There is a wonderful resource on the Internet called BrainPOP, a resources which has been around since 1999. It is an educational program, providing content spanning 7 main subject areas including: Science, Math, English, Social Studies, Health, Arts and Music, and Technology. There are more than 600 animated movies. Each movie is supported by activities such as a quiz, comic strip, experiment, and other printable worksheets, all of which speak to kids in a language and voice that they can understand.
BrainPOP is aligned to the standards of all 50 U.S. states. The lessons contained here were developed to the national education standards of the very respectable organizations, NCTM, NSES and NCTE. The lessons are wonderful fun and my students love them! They have even asked me if they could come to the lab during recess so that they could "play" science on BrainPOP!
I had a free 14 day membership which has expired, but I would love to have it available for my students all year long. There is a BrainPOP for Upper and lower grades and it is also available in Spanish, which is a Godsend to our Hispanic students who are trying to grasp higher concepts while trying to learn English. BrainPOP is a wonderful resource for me to use with my 600 students.
There is a special now that gives a discount for all three of the BrainPOP services: BrainPOP, for grades 3-12, BrainPOP Junior, for grades K-3, and BrainPOP Espanol Lab. I would be tickled pink if I had this resource available for "my" 600 kids.
Thank you so very much for taking the time to read my proposal and giving it consideration.
