My Students

Are you feeling the stresses of everyday life? Does the constant barrage of technology have you overwhelmed? Do you find it hard to concentrate? Would you like a few moments to learn how to quiet your mind? My students have yet to learn tools they can use to calm and focus their lives.

Our students are enthusiastic, active and hard working despite the challenges they face every day.

We are a Title 1 school in a suburb of a larger city that participates in an advance curriculum that challenges our students on a daily basis. Approximately 80%- 90% of our 320 students are considered free or reduced lunch. While there are lots of outside physical activities (team sports, dance classes) that students can engage in, most of our students lack the funds or family support to participate in any type of organized activity. All students kindergarten through 4th, participate in physical education class only one to two times per week for about an hour.

My Project

Imagine coming to PE class and a teacher telling you to take off your shoes, find a mat and imagine we are going on a trip through the jungle or field trip to the farm! My students will be excited to come in to class to get exercising. They will learn movement skills, motor patterns, focusing techniques and stress relieving skills that will transfer to other areas of their lives as well as enhancing their creativity and imaginations. Students will be able to take the skills they learn in yoga and practice at home without worry of having to be taken to a class or having the funds to participate.

Donations to this project will help increase the number of yoga mats available to a class set.

Now every student will be able to participate! And with having instructional mats, students will be able to have a visual of the poses they will be doing for independent yoga practice. By having students learn yoga in PE class, they will be able to learn the tools to help focus, decrease stress and increase learning in other classes and their lives.
