-Our diverse students are excited about coming to school and learning! Unfortunately, many of our learning spaces and classrooms are very small barely fitting the 38 to 40 students we sometimes have in a class with no storage spaces at all. We often have mix-matched tables and chairs that give an air of disorder. A crowded, disorganized space, can turn a positive learning environment into a negative one very quickly. It becomes frustrating not only for students but also for the teacher. This project would allow me to start a student pilot program in my school to renovate small classrooms to be a more balanced and mindful place for teaching and for students to learn.
Students will be involved in renovating the room allowing them to learn how to solve problems that exist in our school community in a positive way!
They will be interviewing the teacher, measuring the room, and creating different design scenarios for the final product. In addition, they will be working on finding additional funding if needed. The materials requested will allow them to balance out the room by providing needed storage space, matching tables and chairs, and adding mindfulness touches and better lighting choices.
Students will be evaluating the success of this project by giving both pre and post-surveys to see if the learning environment feels more welcoming and allows students to learn better. We hope then to present this information to our school board and our PTO to see if we can get further funding to help renovate the other small classrooms in our school.
