Mimic the Masters: Oil Pastels & Brushes for Talented Teens

My Students

Save the arts! Do you remember the first time you worked with a new, exciting art medium? Most of my students come to my class able to draw amazing things with a #2 pencil, and little experience with other materials. Help me introduce them to the colorful world beyond pencils.

I teach at an urban, arts magnet high school serving a high poverty population.

Students audition in 6th grade, and about 20% of the students who audition will gain admission for their 7th grade year. Once in high school, students spend two periods a day in art class. The arts motivate our students to come to school every day, and as a result, we have the best attendance and graduation rate in the district. (We have a 90% graduation rate compared to a district average of 37%.)

My Project

These materials will provide my students with an introduction to oil pastel technique. This particular brand of oil pastels is water-soluble, so students will be able to blend their drawings with brushes and water, naturally encouraging them to explore painting techniques. By relating a potentially scary new technique (painting) to one my students are already very familiar and comfortable with (drawing), I can more easily encourage students to step outside their comfort zone and take artistic risks. Just like many of us used training wheels to ease the transition from riding a tricycle to riding a bicycle, these water-soluble oil pastels and brushes will help smooth the transition from drawing to painting. They will also help students better understand the paintings of master artists such as Rembrandt and Van Gogh without dealing with the extended drying time and chemical hazards of actual oil painting with solvents.

Our students know about tight budgets; the entire district qualifies for free lunch.
