Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Learning chemistry without a textbook is challenging. Teacher created e-books that are printed as packets allow students to take notes, utilize reading comprehension strategies, and differentiate their learning.
These are wonderful 10th grade chemistry students in a low SES, culturally diverse school district.
Students are homogeneously grouped, creating a range of abilities in any one class. Class materials must therefore be customized to meet the needs of each individual learner.
My Project
The chemistry curriculum has been designed to engage our students in science by showing the direct connection of chemistry and their daily lives. We analyze everything from food products to hair care products to genetically modified seeds. We do weekly hands-on labs with guided worksheets to engage the kinesthetic learner, we read and discuss current news articles regularly, and we practice reading and writing in the content area. With the paper that you provide, we can print out the necessary materials to support these activities!
Reading and writing in the science content area is a learned skill.
When students have materials that they can read, take notes on, reflect upon, and carry easily into the lab and into their homes, we can be confident that these skills will be practiced and honed.
