My Students
I work with the BEST grade out there....KINDERGARTEN! My students are so full of wonder and excitement about learning and finally being at "big kid" school. Since school won't start for another week, I don't have a classroom photo but do have a pic of myself and my therapy dog, Desi.
Our town's largest employer, a paper mill, was unexpectedly closed last December.
Most of our students' families were effected by this and our rural district lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost tax revenues. Unfortunately, our elementary guidance counselor's job was cut.
I'm a school social worker but I also have a guidance certificate and clinical counseling license. I begged my principal to let me do individual and group counseling and social skills groups and she agreed but can't provide any funds for materials.
I'm very excited about being able to provide this very important service to our kindergarten students. I have a table but no chairs so I'm asking for five student chairs for lunchtime social skills groups. I'm also asking for a sand table which I've found to be very effective in eliciting conversations with young children.
Thank you very much for considering my request!
My Project
We need a sand table and chairs to participate in individual counseling and social skills groups. I've taken several classes in play therapy and there is a lot of research about the effectiveness of sand tray therapy. Young children don't have language skills to effectively communicate their feelings and needs. By using the sand table and toys, they can express and process their feelings.
Obviously, the chairs are needed for sitting. I've found that "lunch-bunch" groups are very special to children and a wonderful venue for learning and practicing social skills.
Healthy emotional, social and behavioral development are the most important aspects of childhood.
With deficits in any of these areas, it makes learning and being part of the social environment very difficult. Our district's need to cut our elementary guidance counselor's position is a huge loss. While I won't be able to provide all of the services that she did, I was given the space and time to do some of the most basic guidance lessons, i.e., personal safety, and social skills training.
