This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What do you think of when you hear the word math? For many adults, they have a negative opinion of math due to the instruction that they received when they were students. It is my hope that my students will develop a love for math that will lead them to great opportunities in the future.
We are a Title 1 school and have students from all over the world.
We have students from El Salvador, Bangladesh, Honduras, India, and more! In addition to our high ESOL population, we also have students with special needs within our classroom. We have two students that are new to the country, and have very little English. Therefore it is sometimes difficult for us to communicate with each other. However, math is a universal language!
My Project
This year we have a math workshop in our classroom. Students work in small groups and with partners to first learn a skill, and then play a math game to reinforce the skill. The problem that we are having is that we are growing increasingly bored with the few math games in our classroom. They are Kindergarten games! They allow us to practice some very important skills, however, we need to be practicing 2nd grade skills. We would love to have some games that are correlated with our grade level standards. The "At My Seat Math Games", "Mastering Math Games", and "Instant Math Games" will work on SOL skills like time, money, problem solving, and geometry. The two measurement centers focus on weight and length, two skills that require a lot of hands-on practice. The problem solving stamp activity will work well with our previous math project. And lastly, the listening games will help us work on following directions and listening skills, in addition to math!
This project will make such a large difference in our classroom.
They will help us not only with our math skills, but also with our communication skills. These games will give us the chance to work with all of our peers on mastering our 2nd grade curriculum standards!
