Middle Schoolers Needs Materials, Too!

Help me give my students more hands-on and visually stimulating materials to support their learning needs—both grade-level standards and common-sense math alike! My goal is to foster confidence and practical skills along with critical grade-level content.

My Students

I teach an amazing group of 6th-8th graders in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the southside of Chicago. Each day, I pull small groups of students with disabilities and students needing math intervention to scaffold grade-level content and close learning gaps. Everything is tailored to my students, so sometimes I am teaching addition and geometry on the same day.

I know that given access to the right tools and a teacher who cares, every child is capable of success.

I recognize strengths and talents in each of my students and seek to leverage those to build confidence and target other skills. This year, I've noticed that many of my students are visual and tactile learners, thriving with interactive hundreds charts, high-quality manipulatives, and comprehensive visual representations of complex topics.

This project is intended to supplement the materials that I have found and purchased to allow every student to have what they need to approach new problems with an increasing level of independence.

My Project

When students walk into math class each day, they stop at a large table in the corner and pick up their daily supplies. This sometimes includes a worksheet or packet with guided notes or activity sheets, hands-on manipulatives, homework, dry-erase boards, a note to go get their computers, etc.

My students light up when they realize they are picking up manipulatives instead of just paper handouts: they know that this is how they learn best!
