My Project
After reviewing the Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for my students for the 2025-2026 school year, I noticed a significant need for basic reading groups to cater to their specific requirements. Several students entering my special education, eighth grade, ELA classroom next year are reading at a first and second grade level. This realization has prompted me to seek engaging methods for providing direct instruction through interactive activities to help close this gap.
In addition to the online programs offered by my school and the mandated instruction on grade-level ELA standards, it's essential to incorporate games and interactions that motivate students to participate in my reading groups.
Furthermore, the spelling check game will enable those who can read to enhance their reading and writing skills. Although these students may have higher reading levels, all individuals in my class face reading and/or writing disabilities that must be addressed.
Lastly, I plan to read The Crossover, a HiLo graphic novel, as a class while we focus on our individual skills. This book is particularly engaging for my students, as the main characters reflect their identities, with one character even navigating the challenges of ADHD. While reading at a fifth grade level may still be below expectations, it allows access to most public documents. Therefore, I believe it is crucial to bring my students as close to this level as possible before they transition to high school.
