Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are the first cohort of 6th graders at our brand new middle school in the Mission, San Francisco. As the first group, students have been energized and excited about growing a culture of reading and learning in our new space and new grade.

At the end of our first month of school, two things about our 6th graders have stuck out to me: how much each student truly LOVES to read, and how often they ask me when we'll be getting books for our library.

As such, I am determined to provide for them as many engaging and culturally relevant books as possible.

My Project

Every day, students have an opportunity to read from their independent reading books from our classroom library. This is hands down their favorite time of the day, when they can dive deep into a grade-appropriate book that they chose themselves. It is a beautiful thing to watch every student urgently take out their independent book and get started reading without teacher prompting. The desire to read is there, we just need the books!

Your donation to our library will transform our classroom, allowing students to have the books they deserve through the end of the year.

The students have been begging for new books every day, and we are so thankful to you for helping make it happen!
