This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever looked into a middle school student's backpack or locker? I have found socks, papers from 6th grade, string cheese from breakfast and more. Organization is a challenge for many but can be especially challenging for middle school students.

I am a special education teacher that has the wonderful opportunity to co-teach throughout the day.

I work with 14 special education students and 90 regular education students. We are a predominantly low socioeconomic community. Our students change classes and teachers several times a day. Usually from one period to the next their homework is lost. Their backpacks are filled with unnecessary items and often cause great distress for a student. These are exceptional students and when given the right tools are able to be as successful as their peers.

My Project

An organized student with special needs has a leveled playing field. When students know their work is only in one location, they begin to take pride in their work. They will be able to feel successful. I will teach students to organize their classes using dividers, 3 ring binders or an expandable file. Some students will make AM and PM binders while the more disorganized will use expandable files to keep their materials in one place. I will teach organizational skills and reward ongoing organization.

Being able to level the playing field with organizational supplies is just one more step for my students to become a successful student.

I will hope that these skills with move with them from middle school to high school and on throughout their lives.
