My Project

Our art studio is organized chaos, an opportunity to play, communicate, and work on group projects in a way that develops student confidence. The students are eager to learn new things and express themselves but have limited opportunities and resources. This donation will allow us to purchase mural paint and markers to help my student artists collaboratively and publicly express themselves, celebrate our diverse community, and brighten the hallways they walk through every day.

I teach in an urban, low-income industrial community.

My students are diverse, primarily Cambodian-American, Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Brazilian, with over half of the students speaking a language other than English as their primary language. Many students are part of immigrant families, and our student population grows by unpredictable amounts mid-year, stressing the art studio budget.

Our students are met with graffiti, street art, and murals in the surrounding community. This project will help students leave their own marks on their school for years to come, choosing a message to champion on the walls, collaborating with the school community and their peers through the design and painting processes.
