Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to enter middle school for the first time? Many of the incoming 6th grade students feel nervous and unsure about what is going to happen in middle school. I want the older students to create Podcasts to inform the new 6th graders about life in middle school.

I teach middle school students, grades 6 - 8, in a public K-8 Center.

We have all races and levels of SES in our school, though there are over 50% of our students on free and reduced lunch. We also have a moderate amount of students in ESE and ESOL. Each year I see the incoming 6th grade students coming in all wide-eyed and nervous, not knowing what to expect from their middle school life. As they grow in age and experience, I know that they can become mentors of the next generation of incoming 6th graders and help them in this important transition from elementary school to middle school. One way to make this easier to do would be for them to work in cooperative groups and create Podcasts to present to the incoming 6th graders. I feel that students mentoring other students is a positive experience for both the mentor and the mentee. This project would be a fun way to increase their cooperative group skills and technology skills at the same time.

My Project

With these resources, the students will be able to learn how to create Podcasts to show to their fellow students and the school community. The Podcasting guide will show them step by step what to do to plan, film, create, edit, and publish their Podcasts. The cameras, microphones, and batteries will be the important tools needed to create the Podcasts. Becoming mentors of incoming middle school students will change my students' lives for the better. They will understand and empathize with their fellow students -- this can lead to a more caring and nurturing environment in middle school. Students will learn how to work appropriately in cooperative groups, how to use the cameras and microphones, how to download and edit the videos on the computer and then how to present the Podcasts to their fellow students and school community.

I hope this project will be supported because I want to create a more caring atmosphere at our school.

Learning all the parts of creating Podcasts will also give the students skills they can use in their real life world and their future careers. Using the steps to plan their Podcasts will also increase their learning in language arts, social studies, problem solving and technology. The resources of Podcasts about entering middle school will put new 6th Graders' minds at ease in this transition.
