My Project

Hello, I am a middle school math teacher with a passion for teaching math in a meaningful way that is accessible to all students. Math does not have to be dull and boring. With the help of these games, I can teach math standards but with a fun and engaging twist. I will incorporate these games by using math curriculum and standards and asking students real world, math centered questions but in a game-like format. Students will use these to review every Friday, as well as in student-lead centers. For example I will use the color coded Jenga for the math standard 7EE, expressions and equations. Each color will represent a different type of equation problem that students have to solve. If they pull a yellow piece it will be a subtraction equation, orange multiplication, blue addition, purple decimals. The goal is that this practice with various formats of expressions and equations with increase students’ fluency. Another way I would use these games is with Connect Four as an integers stations. On the yellow and red chips would be various numbers. Students would have to solve given integer problems that have the corresponding answers on the chips. To win they would have to solve the questions correctly and achieve four in a row. This captures their attention and allows for more student participation. I tried this style of teaching last year and it really improved students’ overall performance.
