Middle School Girls Lunch Bunch Book Club

Help me give my students a great year of book club books! My 6-8th grade girls really enjoyed reading last year during their lunch, and they are really looking forward to starting some new novels.

My Students

My students are inner city, minority students, many of whom have witnessed or experienced severe trauma. As a result, their lack of coping skills or heightened anxiety may lead to difficult behaviors.

My students are kind, caring and unique, but they need a little more love and support to be successful in a school setting.

Many of my students come from challenging households, so it is important that they can come to school knowing that they can have a safe and comfortable place to go to if they need it.

My Project

After having a very successful middle school girls lunch book club last school year, my 6-8th grade girls have been asking me every day when can they start reading again! Their classroom teachers and I were so surprised to see how much they enjoyed reading and discussing books as a group. The book club started out as eating lunch and reading in our conference room once a week, to 2-3 days a week towards the end of the year!!

The staff at my school have been blown away by the girls' interest in reading current, fiction books that are culturally relevant to their lives.

They are so intrigued by the characters and how similar they are to their own lives. I think this has really been the first time that they have been able to see a reflection of themselves in print that they can truly relate to.

Along with their interest in reading, the girls have also started to show growth in their reading scores. We found that by having an audio-book playing as we read we are able to help the girls who may not have as high of reading abilities still be able to participate and enjoy the book. By sparking an interest in reading at this age, we hope to instill a love for reading that will grow with them for the rest of their lives.
